Why are pet blood donors needed and how can my pet get involved? What are the requirements of a donor?
If a dog or cat is hit by a car, poisoned, or has a bleeding tumor, an emergency blood transfusion can save its life. But where does the new blood come from? Beth Davidow of the Animal Critical Care and Emergency Services Blood Bank in Seattle, Washington says much of it comes from healthy pets whose owners get them involved as community blood donors. She says, “many pet owners are really committed to making sure that another animal in need has blood if they need it.” To become a donor, a dog must be free of diseases, not on any medication, and willing to lie still for treats while its blood is drawn. Cats can donate, too, but must be anesthetized. If you want your pet to extend a helping paw to animals in need, ask your veterinarian to help you find a program in your area. – Dr. Andrea Looney, DVM for the “Purina® Animal Instincts” Podcast Series
